MITCH Spackman’s long-range effort and a Nick Taylor header secured Westbury United a first win in 15 matches as they overcame Oldland Abbotonians.

There was more than an element of luck about United’s opener, however, as Oldland stopper Ryan Perry should have easily dealt with Spackman’s speculative 35-yard effort after ten minutes.

But Westbury made the most of their good fortune and put the result to bed when Taylor powered home Grant Gunning’s corner.

The victory was a first for new boss Shaun Gardiner, who has had an immediate impact upon taking the hot seat at Meadow Lane earlier this month.

“I’m over the moon. It was absolutely deserved,” said Gardiner.

“We played really well. We actually probably didn’t play as well as we have done in the past two games but this is the one where we got the result.

“I think this has always been there, it’s just been about getting it out of the lads.

“I’m so proud of all of them. They worked so hard for it and really had to battle to get the job done.

“We’ve been in a bit of trouble of late but hopefully this is the start of some much better form.”

Westbury face a stiff task in their bid to make it back-to-back wins as they travel to high-flying Cribbs on Saturday.

Gardiner added: “We’re not getting carried away. It’s still only one win in 15.

“Cribbs will be very tricky and we’ve got some tough games coming up but this result will give us confidence.”
