TROWBRIDGE signed off a successful campaign back in South West One East division with a plucky display against league champions Chippenham.

The hosts commanded the first half but a try after the break for Trowbridge gave the league leaders a slight shock on the day they lifted the league title.

Despite the defeat, Trowbridge ended the season in a respectable eighth-place, securing 13 wins in their return to the South West One division.

Chippenham kicked off but Trowbridge soon showed their intentions and built good pressure which pinned Chippenham back.

This was relieved with a counter-ruck, led by Dom Riccio, and the ball was snaffled by Nick Aston and he sprinted off to gain 50 metres.

The hosts got the first points of the afternoon when Trowbridge conceded a penalty at the ruck and Riccio had no problems adding the first three points after four minutes.

Trowbridge used their strengths and their pack maintained the ball well and gained good ground.

They threw everything, including the kitchen sin,k into the attack and pushed hard to get to the Chippenham line but couldn’t cross against the determined defence.

They did win a penalty, which they opted to kick for the posts but narrowly missed.

A driving maul forced Trowbridge to give a penalty which was taken quickly by Lewis Surry, who set off on a spinning run to score his 23rd try of the season.

It was not long before the score was further extended as the restart failed to go 10 metres and the resulting scrum set up Mike Beswick to score the game's second try.

After the break, the visitors gave Chippenham a scare as Trowbridge slowly gained ground and maintained possession for long periods.

Each attack was repelled but it wasn’t long before the pressure mounted and after a scrum and good hands, the ball found its way to Shia Bonnick to go over the line, which Lloyd Davis converted to reduce the deficit to just six points.

Both sides continued to attack and each were unlucky not to score on several occasions until continued from pressure Chippenham sawJoe Turner crash over the line and replacement full-back Sam Saunders kicked over the two points at the death.
