WESTBURY athlete Ellie-J Webb has made a dramatic start to the new season.

The 17-year-old Trowbridge College student and former English Schools’ medallist has twice broken her personal best in the 4k hammer event.

Webb opened the season with a PB of 47.69m representing Team Avon in the opening match of the UK Youth Development U17/20 League.

She trumped that last weekend at Bath University when throwing the hammer 48.89m which ranks he third in the UK and top in the South West Rankings – and according to coach Ken Holmes better is surely to come.

“Ellie is doing really well at the moment,” said Holmes.

“She has actually been throwing a lot further in training and I expect her to make quite a lot of good progress this summer and I am sure she will throw over 50 metres.”

Unfortunately Webb is too old to qualify for the World Youth Games in Columbia or the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa and probably too young to challenge for the European U20 Championships.

John of Gaunt School student Sean Cleveland took full advantage of competing on ‘home soil’ in the third Fieldfest Open Meeting promoted by Team Bath AC and Stroud & District AC at the University with two victories – and PBs in both as well.

Competing in the under 17 men’s long and triple jumps 16-year-old Cleveland leapt to victory recording jumps of 5.70m and 12.27m respectively.

Another winner was Devizes’ athlete Emily Hutchinson in the under 20 women’s shot with 11.41 while Sarah Wilson won the under15 girls long jump with 4.43m and Sam Burkey was top in the under 13 boys’ long jump with 3.40m and the discus with 12.36.
