MELKSHAM Town manager Darren Perrin described this weekend’s title triumph as his greatest moment in football.

Perrin’s men were crowned champions of the Toolstation League Premier Division for the first time in their history yesterday following a 2-1 victory at Willand Rovers in their final game of the season.

The Conigre chief, who led Melksham to the First Division crown in 1997, was blown away by his team’s accomplishment and said that following the final whistle, for once, he was left unable to put his thoughts into words.

“It doesn’t happen to me very often but I was speechless,” said Perrin.

“To lead my hometown club to the Western League Premier Division title was without a doubt my greatest moment in football.

“I’ve had some good moments with Frome, Chippenham, Paulton and Forest Green but yesterday was completely surreal.

“We were absolutely magnificent in the first half and at half-time, it was a travesty because we should have been five or six-nil up – we hit the post three times.

“To be fair to Willand, we were hanging on in the second half but we managed to do that. Willand are a top club and the way that they gave us a guard of honour after we picked up the trophy was fantastic.

“I’m so happy for everyone connected with Melksham Town football club. I’m delighted for the 100 Melksham Town supporters that made the trip to Willand and I’m delighted for the players, who have been magnificent all season.”
