TROWBRIDGE ABC’s Callum Smith claimed a silver medal at the Pirkka Cup in Finland.

The Trowbridge youngster was drawn against one of Finland’s top junior boxers in the semi-final of the international tournament but he could not cope with the tenacious Smith, who started quickly and was on top from the first bell.

By the end of the bout, the Finn was under constant pressure against Smith’s strength and work-rate.

In the final, Smith faced the unbeaten Swedish champion, who had looked even more impressive in his semi-final.

Smith boxed superbly but ultimately lost on a split decision after there had been little to choose between the two.

Trowbridge coach Steve Bryant said: “Callum came up against two junior boxers that had both had previous international experience. He boxed way beyond himself and gave two brilliant performances. I plan to take him back next year to win gold.”

Harry Glover and Bradley Smith both lost their pre-quarter-final bouts against talented boxers from London.

Tickets are on sale for Trowbridge ABC’s show at the Civic Centre on May 22. Call 01225 765851 or 07833 246579 for more information.
