A VIRTUOSO performance from Ed Young was not quite enough to inspire Wiltshire into the last eight of Unicorns Knockout Trophy despite their 46-run victory over Devon at Warminster yesterday.

The former Gloucestershire ace, who now plays his club cricket for Potterne, clubbed a 91-ball century before taking three wickets to help dismiss the visitors and secure success for his side.

However, Cornwall clinched victory in the group, ironically mainly due to the victory of Mike Coles' men.

The Duchy lost by 21 runs to Wales, who finished second, with Wiltshire's win ensuring the group was decided on net run rate. Wilshire finished on five points, but ended up third.

Put into bat at Warminster, Wiltshire were in early trouble at 34-5, with openers Tom Morton and Steve Bullen, number three Uzi Qureshi, skipper Mike Coles and Potterne's Neil Clark all falling cheaply.

The repair job was led by wicketkeeper Michael Bates (36), who shared a 57-run partnership with Young before the latter put on 59 with Corsham's Ashur Morrison (19).

Young hit nine fours and four sixes in his century, Jake Roberts adding a late 33 to take the home side up to a competitive 233-9.

There were three wickets each for Devon's Tom Allin and Ben Green.

Devon replied steadily as Max Curtis hit 52 but wickets began to fall as Roberts took 2-23 for the hosts.

Young then weighed in late on, taking 3-15 to see the visitors fall short on 187.
