WESTBURY mum of four Fiona Price clinched a bronze medal at last weekend’s European Masters 10K Championships in Italy.

Avon Valley Runners athlete Price, 47, was making her first attempt at European glory in Grosseto and, in windy conditions, managed a personal best of 39:16.

The time was also a club age category record for Price, coached by Bradford on Avon-based Team GB coach Martin Rush and accompanied on the trip by husband Sean, and earned her third spot in the bet 45-49 age group.

Price is the current Wiltshire 10km champion and ARC national 10 mile champion and will compete at the British Masters 10km and the World Masters track championship at both 5,000 and 10,000 metres later this summer, with a long-term view to tackling next year’s London Marathon.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Wosika has made a highly promising debut at the steeplechase.

The 15-year-old John of Gaunt School student from Trowbridge won the U17 women’s 1500m steeplechase in the second Youth Development League Midland Premier Division match at Cardiff clocking 5:27.57.

That was good enough to put her second in the South West rankings and 11th in the UK and she said: “It was my first one and I wasn’t sure what to expect. My main aim was just to finish but my coach (Rush) was very happy with my time. It certainly hasn’t put me off doing it again.”

It has been an encouraging start to the season for Wosika after opening up with a PB in the 800m at the BMC PB Classic meeting at Millfield School at the start of the month.

“Next I am going to run a 1500m at the Wiltshire Championships in Tidworth this Saturday,” added Wosika, Wosika was one of a number of Wiltshire athletes representing the composite Team Avon – drawn from Team Bath AC, Bristol & West AC and Yate & District – in the match last weekend.

Another winner was Semington’s Will Stockley, who also made a rare outing over the barriers and raced to victory in a PB of 4:36.08, the quickest in the South West this year to put the 16-year-old Melksham Oak School student fourth in the UK.

Hilperton’s Robert Howorth won the B event in a best time of 4:45.97 in only his second attempt at the event.

Twin brother John won the U17s 1500m in a season’s best of 4:22.59 and finished second in the 800m B race in 2:11.19.

Southwick sprinter Zoe Mattacks also had a productive day with the 16-year-old John of Gaunt student winning both the U17s 100m (12.90secs) and 200m (27.41secs) events. In addition, she was third in the 80m hurdles in a PB of 12.21secs.

Bowerhill’s Emily Hutchinson won the U20s shot (10.95m) and was second in both the javelin (18.80m) and discus (30.43m).

St Augustine’s School sprinter Adam Gordon was runner-up in the U17s 200m (24.95secs) and fourth in the 100m (11.97secs) and Lavington’s Owen Harnett was fourth in the U20s 100m (11.60secs). Louis Torto, Ulas Aakus and Jordan Earley also scored highly in the sprints.

Fraser Russell and Imogen Dawe-Lane finished second and third respectively in the high jump for U17 men and women and in the long jump Toby Pentreath as runner-up with a leap of 6.39m.

The next match will be at Cheltenham on June 28.
