ELEANOR Webster smashed a 21-year-old county record with a superb run in the 2015 Wiltshire Athletics County Track and Field Championships at the Tidworth Oval.

Webster, who lives in the village of Alderton near Malmesbury, won the U13 girls’ 800m in a time of 2mins 26.87 to slash five seconds off the old mark of 2:32.3 set by E Morris in 1994.

The time is the quickest in the South West this year and puts Webster sixth in the UK rankings for U13 girls.

It was one of the stand-out performances at a terrific meeting which attracted a record entry of just over 300 athletes, who took full advantage of the glorious sunny conditions to post numerous personal bests.

Webster’s was one of two county records set at the meeting with the other going to fellow rookie Katie Loach of Swindon Harriers in the U13 girls’ discus.

The race of the day came in the U17 men’s 800m with in-form Semington runner Will Stockley smashing his personal best – only to be beaten into second.

Stockley, who is a student at Melksham Oak School, found himself up against former English Schools’ medallist and 800m specialist Will Crisp of Swindon and the pair had a titanic battle before the latter edged ahead in the closing stages to win in 1:56.89.

Stockley was just a stride or two behind in 1:57.42 which clipped almost a second off his previous best set in Watford last month and means he has improved by three-and-a-half second since last summer which represents tremendous progress – especially for a young man who is primarily a 1500m and steeplechase runner.

For the record the pair soared to No 1 and 2 in the South West Rankings with those times.

The Howorth brothers from Hilperton had a busy day amassing five medals. Running the U17 men’s 3000m for the first time John raced to a comfortable victory while twin Robert was runner-up in the 1500m and second in the shot Younger brother Rory romped to victory in the U15 boys 1500m and then showed a good turn of speed with third in the 300m.

Another middle distance runner to impress was John of Gaunt student Hayden Bailey as he won the U15 boys’ 800m in a canter by an astonishing 18 seconds.

Yatesbury runner Gemma Shepherd showed her class to win the senior women’s 1,500m from Jackie Rockcliffe of Avon Valley Runners, who was also runner-up in the 800m won by her AVR clubmate Holly Newman.

Trowbridge runner Caitlin Wosika continued her good start to the season by winning the U17s 1500m while Corsham’s Jade Littlechild lifted the U15s crown at the 1,500m distance.

Westbury’s Will Kennedy added another two titles to his collection as he clinched a sprint double in the senior men’s 100m and 200m, with Lavington School’s Owen Harnett runner-up in the 100m and third in the 200m.

Southwick athlete Zoe Mattacks continued her good form with a double gold medal success in the U17 women’s 100m and 80m hurdles.

Trowbridge’s William Browne impressed, sprinting to PBs in both the U15 boys’ 100m and 200m races.

In the 100m Browne, who is a student at St Augustine’s School, clocked 12.3secs to finish second behind Charlie Curry of Marlborough & District (MADJA), while in the 200m he just missed out on a medal clocking 25.08secs.

To complete a good weekend Browne, who also plays rugby for Chippenham, was told on Sunday that he had been selected to play for Dorset & Wiltshire next season.

In the throws Gabriella Holt was a double winner in the U17 women’s hammer and shot.

Event director Alison Phillips said: “It was a magnificent day, with lots of impressive performances and many athletes recording PBs, which was fantastic particularly as the heat made it a hard day for some, especially the track competitors.

“I’m glad the championships gave so many athletes the chance to show just what they can do, and all our medal winners deserved their reward.

“It was really good to see such a strong Quad Kids entry, and the youngest athletes were particularly praised by the organisers of that section of the day for their sportsmanlike and excellent behaviour throughout.

“I hope many of the medal winners will be able to compete for Wiltshire at the South West Inter Counties event at Exeter in July. Thanks too to the army of volunteers who made this such a successful event, and to all the athletes and parents for their support.”

MADJA picked up 11 golds, 10 silvers and nine bronze medals, with triple gold going to U13B Oli Rhoads, who made a clean sweep of his three events, the 200m, the high jump and long jump.

Jay Roden added double gold in the U15 boys' long jump and javelin titles, with U17 Callum Short in the 400m hurdles, Luke Leadbetter in the U15 boys' 80m hurdles, U13 boys' Thomas Holmes in the javelin and U20 men's Alex Painting in high jump. Edie Noble took gold in the U11 Girls Quad Kids event with a total of 254 points.
