NEARLY 1,500 pupils from across the county took part in the 2015 Wiltshire School Games at Marlborough College last week.

Students from 38 primary schools and 26 secondary schools competed in 10 sports including tri golf, swimming, athletics, tennis, orienteering, rounders, touch rugby, table tennis, gymnastics and trampolining.

The Games were opened by England Women’s rugby star Natasha Hunt, part of the victorious 2014 Rugby World Cup team, with the opening ceremony involving an exhibition of street basketball and freestyle football from world record holders SBX Sports, alongside dance performances from Matravers School and Horningsham Primary School.

The ceremony also included a parade of flags by the winning schools, who took part in the Games design a flag competition Hunt spent the morning meeting with young athletics and said: “The whole set-up was incredible and the participation was inspiring. It was great to be involved in such a fantastic event."

The Games also involved 100 young leaders from Wiltshire schools who had completed training for officials, scorers and leaders in each of the sports.

Wiltshire and Swindon Sport CEO Steve Boocock said: “They really did a fantastic job and I heard lots of positive comments from schools and clubs on their work.

“Thank you to them for their exemplary attitudes and the schools that provided the leaders.

“Thanks also must go to the volunteers from clubs, county associations and national governing bodies of sport along with staff from Wiltshire Council and Active Trowbridge.

“We were also grateful for the support from local Sainsbury’s stores for refreshments on the day."
