WARMINSTER Town joint-manager Derek Graham thought that his team’s first goal of the season was Premier League quality.

Warminster opened up their campaign by upsetting Ashton & Backwell United 2-1 and Louis Sparey’s chipped effort, which came at the end of a move involving Paul Farrell, Josh Brigham, George Butler and Alex Lapham, left Graham purring.

Sparey’s goal cancelled out by a Nathan Rendell header but with five minutes to go, the home side sealed all three points when Tom Golledge was bundled down narrowly outside of the Ashton penalty area.

The offending player was shown a second booking for the challenge and Brigham stepped up to slam home a free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner.

“The first goal would not have been out of place as one of the Match of the Day’s goals of the month,” said Graham.

“It must be pointed out that for goals of the quality of our first one to be created, you need a top surface to play on, and if there is a better playing area than Weymouth Street this season, I will be very surprised.”
