The Bristol Avon at Barton Farm hosted the six-way inter club event on Sunday between Airsprung, Chippenham, Royal British Legion, Pewsey, Bath Spartans and Trowbridge.

Pewsey took the team honours with 63 lb 6 oz followed by Royal British Legion with 49 lb 4 oz 8 dm and Airsprung with 33 lb 7 oz.

Individual honours on the day went to Mike Marsden of Pewsey with a bream catch weighing 41 lb 6 oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots. Bill Croon of RBL took runner up spot with a bream catch weighing 18 lb 15 oz, taken on feeder-fished red maggots. Lee Wakefield of RBL clinched third prize with a bream catch weighing 15 lb 7 oz.

  • Boats proved to be a nuisance in the Trowbridge Seniors match fished on Tuesday on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Whaddon and weights were well below their best.

Jim Escott, from Melksham, carried off top prize with a mixed catch of roach, skimmers, perch and gudgeon, weighing 5 lb 4 oz, taken on pole-fished pinkies.

Paul Brown, from Devizes, took the runner-up spot with a roach and skimmers catch weighing 2 lb 4 oz, taken on pole fished red maggots. Brian Ellis, from Melksham, clinched third prize with a roach and skimmers catch weighing 2 lb 1 oz taken on pole fished red maggots.

Other placings: 4. Mike O’Neil Melksham, Dave Baker Trowbridge & Roger Green Trowbridge all 2 lb 0 oz.

  • There was mixed sport on the Wessex Water trout fisheries.

Hawkridge is still fishing well during overcast cool days and boats are finding the best sport at the dam end of the lake.

At Clatworthy, 246 fish were taken at a rod average of 2.7. William Gibbs took a five-fish limit for 22 lb 8 oz and George Gale took five for 21 lb 2 oz.

Mr Foster took the best fish of the week – a rainbow weighing 6 lb 1 oz. Philip Giles took the best four-fish limit, weighing 16 lb 0 oz.

  • Competitors found mixed sport in the Trowbridge Open match fished on Wednesday on the Bristol Avon at Staverton.

In-form Gary Etheridge, from Devizes, took another good win with an all-roach catch weighing 16 lb 0 oz, taken on waggler fished hemp and tares.

Nick Johns, from Trowbridge, took the runner-up prize with another roach catch weighing 10 lb 14 oz, also taken on waggler fished hemp and tares.

Pete Zymiak, from Trowbridge, again framed in third spot with a roach and perch catch weighing 7 lb 12 oz taken on waggler fished red maggots.

Other placings: 4. Alan Hillier Westbury 5 lb 13 oz; 5. Steve Martin Westbury 4 lb 2 oz; 6. Bernie Blythe Westbury 3 lb 10 oz.

  • Weights were fairly spread in the Blue Circle Open match fished on Saturday. Pete Lowe, from Bath, took top honours on the day with a carp catch weighing 68 lb 8 oz, taken on waggler fished pellets.

Barry Meaden, from Westbury, took runner up prize with a carp catch weighing 45 lb 8 oz, taken on waggler fished pellets. Paul Reynolds from Bath clinched third prize with a carp catch weighing 37 lb 8 oz taken on pole fished pellets.
