DARREN Perrin has urged his Melksham Town troops to be more clinical in front of goal despite netting four times in their defeat of the Premier Division’s bottom side, Clevedon Town.

Melksham were in control of the contest from the off and had chances to rack up an even bigger score but failed to make the most of them before finally muscling their way to a 4-1 success.

An early red card for Clevedon’s Ryan Gissing dictated both team’s gameplans, with the hosts piling men behind the ball.

Dan Kovacs put Melksham ahead from the penalty that followed the sending off and, after Gary Higdon made it 2-0, Tyler Davis gave Clevedon a lifeline before the break.

Melksham upped the tempo after the restart and further goals for Ryan Bennett and Joe Stradling put the game to bed.

“I’m pleased with the result but still a bit concerned by how wasteful we are in front of goal,” said Melksham chief Perrin.

“The red card changed things and it affected the way they played. They put everyone behind the ball instead of maybe trying to take us on.

“It was a case of attack against defence for the 90 minutes. They made it very difficult for us, but fair play to them, that’s what they thought was the best thing for them to do.

“Clevedon are a young side working wonders just to stay in the league. The people there are doing amazing things so I am not going to criticise them.

“The players have been told and they know that if they continue to be so wasteful then they will get punished against the better sides.

“Having said that, it’s very pleasing that, even though we are not firing on all cylinders, we are still picking up good results. We’ve won three and drawn one of the last four and that’s very good form.”

Melksham turn their attentions to the Wiltshire Senior Cup this weekend and travel to Division One side Westbury United, where Perrin is expecting a nervy afternoon.

“It’s a real banana skin. They have changed their manager and have picked up,” said Perrin.

“It’s a competition we want to do well in and we will go there with a full-strength side for what we know is going to be a difficult game.

“We’ve won it twice in the last three years and we’d love to try to win it again, but we know it’s going to be difficult with teams like Bradford, Highworth and Salisbury all involved as well.”
