MARLBOROUGH Town ended a seven-week wait for a first win of the season as Nathan Good fired them to a last-gasp 2-1 success away at Wilts Calne Town.

Robert Harland’s side had picked up three draws on the road in their opening eight league games and it was only a matter of time before they turned the corner to collect the full three points.

Marlborough had to do it the hard way against bottom side Calne, though, and were a goal in arrears at half-time at Bremhill View.

However, when a home player was sent off for a handball on the line that gave Harland’s men the impetus and Oliver Sly drew them level from the penalty spot before Good lashed home the winner in the dying minutes.

“We’ve been getting closer and closer each week and it’s finally arrived. It’s a big relief and it’s really well deserved too,” said Harland.

“We were a goal down against the run of play. We had four or five good chances which went begging, and we were flagged offside a few times as well.

“We were constantly pushing and the red card and the penalty gave us the man advantage to keep getting forwards to go for the win.

“All game we were creating chances but we just couldn’t get the ball in. Credit to the Calne keeper, he made some really good saves to frustrate us so when we finally got the winner right at the end it was a big relief.”

Elsewhere, Trowbridge Town climbed within a point of top spot as they triumphed 3-2 away at league leaders Shrewton United.

Leon Greenland, Nick Ridout and substitute Daniel Jordan were all on target for Town, while Lewis Barr and Dean Smith replied for Shrewton.

Trowbridge Wanderers romped to a 3-0 success at home to Devizes Town Reserves.

Of the six matches played, the other half all ended in draws, with the most entertaining coming at Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves as they shared a 3-3 thriller with Andover New Street Swifts.

Sarum Youth’s clash at home to Chippenham Park Development finished 2-2, while Melksham Town Reserves drew 1-1 with Wroughton.
