CORSHAM Town manager Jeff Roberts says that his team ‘didn’t deserve’ to beat Swanage & Wareham and progress to the first round proper of the FA Vase last weekend.

Toolstation League First Division table-toppers Corsham are due to travel to Moneyfields on October 31 but only after a dramatic 4-3 second round qualifying win at Dorset Premier League outfit Swanage, with which the Corsham boss was less than impressed.

A brace from top scorer Levi Cox and goals from Matt Jenkins and Sam Ockwell secured victory but Roberts says that his players have been told in no uncertain terms that they must up their game going forward.

“We haven’t played well for a few weeks now and at half-time, we kept them out on the pitch and gave them a bit of a rollicking. We also had a bit of a go after the game too,” said the Corsham chief.

“We said to them that Swanage would come at us because they had nothing to lose but as soon as we were 3-1 up, we seemed to think the game was won.

“We didn’t deserve to win the game. Credit to Swanage because they should have really won the game and we were lucky.

“We have managed to have a lot of players in the side that are 18 or under this season but with the team at the moment, they’ll play really well one week and then they’ll drop off completely for the next few games.

“The good thing is that we’ve still been getting results. We’re into the first round proper of the Vase and we’re still top of the league but we’ve got to start playing better soon.”

Former Chippenham Town striker George Pawley made his Corsham debut after joining from Radstock Town whilst Roberts is also hoping to complete the signing of Cadbury Heath defender Luke Hall-Cousins ahead of Saturday’s Wiltshire Senior Cup clash with Hellenic League Purton.

Dan King and Gary Blackwood are also back available for selection.
