A LACK of defensive options did little to hinder Chippenham Park Development as they claimed the scalp of title-chasers Malmesbury Victoria last weekend.

Manager Nigel Tripp was only able to field one out-and-out defender against the Wiltshire League’s highest-scorers, but Park put four goals past the Vics to claim a fine a three points.

After Matty Legg’s opener was cancelled out by two Malmesbury goals, the Park man netted again early in the second period to restore parity before Jake Brewer and Ben Pring rounded off a 4-2 victory.

“I only had one natural defender in the squad for Saturday, so we had to shuffle things around,” said Tripp.

“But we play at Stanley Park, which is one of the best pitches around here, and that means that we can get it down and play, which suits us. It didn’t suit Malmesbury as much because they’re a direct side.

“It’s a good result for us, but I’d say that we haven’t had our strongest side out yet.

“We’re a development team, so we’re always trying to bring the young players through and develop them for the first team (Chippenham Park) but hopefully we can still climb the league eventually.”

Elsewhere, Melksham Town Reserves moved level on points with second-placed Malmesbury with a 5-2 win over Devizes Town Reserves, whilst Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves drew 1-1 at Vale of Pewsey, Jacob Matthews scoring for Bassett whilst Jacob Garrett was on target for the home side.

Trowbridge are through to the second round of Wiltshire Senior Cup after dispatching Marlborough Town 4-0 at Elcot Lane.

Jamie Jordan netted a brace whilst Dan Jordan and debutant Dan King also got themselves on the scoresheet.

But Trowbridge Wanderers were unable to pull off an upset as they lost 3-1 to Sydenhams League Downton.
