MELKSHAM Town’s fine run of form continued at a canter as they progressed in the Les Phillips Cup with a 2-0 win over Longwell Green Sports.

Will Thomson opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he showed some nice skill to drive into the box and find the bottom corner.

Joe Stradling then put the contest to bed 11 minutes after the break when he was left one-on-one with the Longwell keeper and kept his composure.

“It was very comfortable,” said Melksham boss Darren Perrin.

“We did a job and it gave me the opportunity to rotate the squad a little bit and bring in a couple of youngsters who did very well – notably Will Thomson and Warren Maidment.

“Joe, even by his own admissions, has missed two or three good chances to win the game even more convincingly.

“It is pleasing to progress and give those lads an opportunity because they are the future of the club.

“I am delighted by the way the boys approached the game.”

Tuesday night's game against Gillingham was postponed due to Storm Barney and the lack of action gave Perrin the chance to rest his players ahead of a long trip to Bodmin Town in the second round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

“It was frustrating (to have the Gillingham game called off) but it was probably the logical and right decision,” said Perrin, who joked that the team would be heading to Cornwall today.

“Nobody really wants to play football in those winds because it is a total lottery.

“It gave us an opportunity to rest some players before our short trip down the road on Saturday.

“You need a bit of luck in the cup draws and we certainly haven’t had it.

“We have got arguably one of the favourites to win the FA Vase and they haven’t lost all season.

“Don’t ever rule us out as on our day we can go and beat anyone.

“I’d like to think they are also saying they have a tough game.

“These are the games you relish to be involved in.”
