TROWBRIDGE head coach Steve Ojomoh says there are lessons to be learnt from his side's relegation as he prepares to step back from his role at the club.

A 29-0 defeat away to Newbury Blues brought the curtain down on their South West One East campaign as they finished second-from-bottom.

Despite the disappointment of the demotion to the Southern Counties, Ojomoh believes it will give the club a chance to address the issues and come back a stronger unit for it.

“As a club, we just couldn’t wait for the season to end,” he said.

“It has been tough and when you look at it, we’ve probably overachieved as a club over a number of years and it has caught up with us.

“The movement of the club from Green Lane was one thing but nothing has come through from the colts.

“I realised after the season we had two years ago when we won everything going and had nothing to show on the incomings; (that) tells you all you need to know."

“We realised with all the publicity we got we still couldn’t get people in then we will have to grow our own.

“The message is very clear now we have gone down.

"We have to go back to enjoying our rugby and to make sure our base is very strong and the focus goes into the junior end, and making sure that we are producing decent players to compete for seasons to come.

“I don’t think there should be any push to go back up; certainly not for another couple of seasons, while the next batch of colts come through.

“I think these things happen for a reason and it is a good thing for the club.”

Ojomoh, who has been at the club for four seasons, said it was his decision to step away from his role as head coach.

“I won’t be coaching next season,” added Ojomoh.

“I will be there to give a hand from time to time when commitments allow with the junior section.

“I spoke to the management about it before Christmas but it wasn’t something I wanted to make public because it is not about me.

“I knew this season, if we were to stay up, my recommendation was to bring in a player-coach.

“Now we have gone down, what the club needs is to go back to the enjoyment side of things and it is important to have a new voice and a new way of thinking.”
