A MAMMOTH total in excess of 300 set Warminster up for just a second win of the WEPL season as they downed Thornbury by 23 runs on Saturday.

The match was a battle between the division’s bottom two sides, with Warminster having recorded just one previous victory and basement boys Thornbury looking to get off the mark.

However, the two sides showed that their is still plenty of talent within their line-ups as just shy of 600 runs were scored in west Wiltshire.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Tom Davie’s Warminster got off to a flying start as Jack Berrisford (82) and Mark Coxon Tenty (61) shared an opening stand of 105.

Peter Hickerton (82) continued the assault after Coxon Tenty fell as he and Berrisford put on a further 116 for the second wicket before Warminster eventually finished their innings on 310-5 off 50 overs.

The home side then increased their stranglehold on the game when Rory Cullinan (4-24) removed Thornbury opener Marcus Wormwell for a duck.

However, the visitors began to offer up plenty of stubborn resistance and a 112-run stand for the fourth wicket between Nick Willis-Stovold (76) and Luke Davis (54) brought them back into the game.

Warminster refused to be beaten, though, and the efforts of Cullinan and captain Davie (3-68) eventually brought the Thornbury innings to a close on 287.
