CORSHAM Town showed a strength of character to come from 4-0 down to secure a point from their opening game of the season on Tuesday night.

Nigel Tripp’s new look side got their campaign underway at Hardenhuish when facing Chippenham Park.

The hosts raced into a 4-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Danny Sibley, Jordan Coulter, Mark Robinson and Lewis McCarron.

But Ben Pring started the fightback midway through the second half after Tripp used all three of his substitutes.

Corsham went on to grab a last minute equaliser - much to the delight of Tripp.

“Ben Pring scored a hat-trick, although he is trying to claim all four. I’m not sure if one of them has been given as an own goal,” the Corsham manager said.

“We did well in the second half, we spoke at half-time about what we had done wrong and they went out and put it right.

“We are a new side so it is pleasing to see the character from the boys.”

Devizes Town hit the top of the early standings on Tuesday night after their 3-1 success over Warminster Town.

Darran Walters’ men went in at the break with their winning score thanks to goals from Luke Enderby, Jordon Matthews and Tom Slater.

On Saturday, Westbury United kicked off their season with a 1-0 victory on the road at Almondsbury UWE.

Midway through the first half, Ian Groves played in Grant Gunning and the flying wing-back attempted to chip Matt Semple but the Almondsbury goalie produced an outstanding save on the edge of his area.

In the second period, United stopper Charlie Heydon tipped a header onto the bar and then, Nathan Hallett-Young won a lengthy foot-race down the wing before keeping his composure and laying the ball back for Groves to slot home the only goal of the game.

Warminster suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Calne Town, Josh Legg getting a debut goal for the visitors and Mark Dolman scoring Calne’s other from the penalty spot.
