WHAT has already been a fantastic year for Tom Gale reached another new height this week with confirmation that he has been included in the 2016-17 British Athletics Futures Programme, writes Kevin Fahey.

The 17-year-old Trowbridge junior international high jumper has been rewarded for his outstanding summer, in which he soared to top spot in the UK U20 men’s rankings with a personal best of 2.18m and finished ninth in the World Junior Championships.

“I am just so happy to get the news that I will get funding from the Futures Programme,” said Gale.

“I am very appreciative of the help I will be getting from British Athletics. It proves all the hard work is paying off and my efforts are being recognised. To be one of just 32 athletes selected from thousands across the country is an incredible feeling.”

In practical terms, the support from the Futures Programme means the John of Gaunt School student will have access to physio and medical back-up, plus will be given sessions with nutritionists and sports psychologists.

Part of the funding can also be used to pay towards overseas competition and kit, although on the latter, Gale has already received a nice package from Nike as the sportswear and shoe company support the Futures Programme.

Of course, with the extra support, which Gale is receiving for the first time, comes an expectation that he will continue his progress as one of the country’s brightest young high jumpers.

“My big target for 2017 will be the European Junior Championships, where I will be looking to at least win a medal, with the ultimate ambition of getting a gold,” added Gale.

“I will also have one eye on the 2018 Commonwealth Games qualifying height of 2.26m. It would be great to close to that.”
