LUXOL St Andrews were denied a quick-fire cup double as Stockton & Codford lifted the Trowbridge & District League's A M Print & Copy-sponsored A&B Cup with a 2-0 win in last night's final at Westbury United's Meadow Lane.

Having lifted the Wiltshire Junior Cup on Saturday afternoon after a thrilling comeback victory over Tawny Owl, Luxol returned to the same venue for their showdown with their first division stablemates.

The game was scarcely five minutes old when referee David Pound penalised Luxol's Jordan Gullis for a push inside the penalty area, allowing Jason Povey to step forward and cooly despatch the spot kick into the opposite corner past Lukasz Bareja.

A level first half picked up in intensity closer to the break as Luxol began to find their feet in the tie.

Daniel Sandford went close with a half-volley that whistled just wide whilst Jed Osborne also forced an impressive close-range save from Stockton's Tom Lucas.

Having soaked up the pressure, Stockton & Codford delivered what would prove the decisive blow in first-half stoppage time shortly afterwards.

Some smart footwork by Ashley Caws created a gap and allowed him to slot his shot home beneath Bareja into his left-hand corner, cementing an advantage his side would not relinquish.

Luxol, to their credit, showed resolve to get back into the contest after the break but lacked that cutting edge in front of goal to draw themselves level.

At the other end, Bareja reacted smartly to tip a rasping effort over the bar as Stockton gave a reminder of their threat on the break, a threat that very nearly materialised into a third goal.

Povey took possession inside the area after Caws was denied the chance to add to his tally, but his looping effort came back off the crossbar and eventually the ball was scrambled clear.

Stockton soaked up the last of Luxol's pressure in the closing stages and held on for an impressive win.

Luxol's Sandford was awarded the Kevin Mounty Trophy for Man of the Match, while the trophies on the evening were presented by Roxi Meaden, on behalf of sponsors A M Print & Copy.
