WROUGHTON assistant manager Paul Bowden was overjoyed with his team’s performance as they ran out 3-0 winners away to Melksham Town Reserves.

After a goalless first half, the visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Glen Armstrong lashed home.

Shane Hibbert completed the scoring with a quickfire double as Wroughton chalked up three goals in eight minutes.

Hibbert’s first saw him latch onto a poor goal kick before applying the finish, while his second was slightly more impressive as he hit the frame of the goal from distance before the ball bounced over the line to seal the win.

The result means Mark Love’s troops are level on points with top-of-the-table Shrewton United, with two games in hand on their title rivals.

Bowden said: “It was a great result and we probably played the best football we have played all season.

“We started the game very well. We were on the front foot and had a couple of half-chances which were blocked by their defenders.

“Although there weren’t many chances, they didn’t look like creating anything. We were by far the better side in the first half.

“They had a bit more of the ball in the second half, but that was mainly in midfield. Our defence was superb, we didn’t really give them a sniff.

“If someone would have offered us a point from this game, we would have bitten their hand off. To win at Melksham is a tremendous result.”

Love’s outfit need just one point from their final two league games to be crowned champions before then they face Shrewton in Fountain Trophies Cup final on May 6.

Bowden added: “It’s been a great season for us. We have been consistent and we have just been unlucky in the games we have lost.

“You need a bit of luck on the way. If we go into the next two games with the same attitude, we will have nothing to worry about.

“All in all, the season has been superb. We’ve brought in some experienced players who have played at a higher level and have some good youngsters, which bodes well for next season.”

In the other two games, pace-setters Shrewton churned out their 20th win of the season with a 4-0 triumph at home to Devizes Town Reserves, while Trowbridge Town moved up to sixth following their 5-2 victory at Corsham Town Reserves.
