NEW Warminster captain Pete Hickerton is looking forward to getting back to business as his troops attack WEPL Wiltshire this season.

Tom Davie was the skipper last year, with Warminster relegated from Premier Two Glos/ Wilts with just four wins from their 18 fixtures.

After that, Davie stepped down from his position, and Hickerton was more than happy to rise to the occasion as they looked for an immediate promotion.

“I was already at the club and have been for a number of years now,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say it was definitely something I wanted to do but then, I wouldn’t say it is something I didn’t want to do either.

“With Tom stepping down, there was that void and I had a chat with a couple of people. From there I decided to give it a go.

“Hopefully we can do a good job this year. The aim is to win the league and I am going to be quite open about that.”

While last season saw them finish bottom at Prem Two level, Hickerton insists there was enough talent in the squad to compete at that level.

“We obviously need to rebuild. But we feel rejuvenated, there is a lot of positive energy about the club,” he added.

“The committee have worked really hard to make sure we are in the best possible shape on, and off of the field.

“The players were there last year. We were good enough and we didn’t quite perform to the right level.

“We had the ability last year. That is the challenge for us now and hopefully things will change this year.”

Hickerton will have home comforts when he skippers Warminster for the first time on Saturday as they entertain newly-promoted Royal Wootton Bassett.

Trowbridge also start their season but they will be away from home in their first game as they travel to Purton.
