WESTBURY skipper Alex Senneck hopes his side's work in the field will come to match the start they made with the bat after they opened their West of England Premier Two Glos/Wilts campaign with victory at Hatherley & Reddings on Saturday.

Set 207 to win in Gloucestershire, the visitors knocked off the required runs inside 34 overs to wrap up a comfortable seven-wicket triumph, although Senneck admitted the target should not have been that testing after a below-par effort with the ball.

"We didn't bowl brilliantly - we were a bit ragged,'' said the skipper.

"It was the first league match but we didn't bowl particularly tightly and not as efficiently as we would have liked and that probably allowed them (Hatherley) to get 20 or 30 more than they should.''

Gareth Dawson (34) and Richard Boroughs (31) gave the home side a solid opening platform with a partnership of 56 but otherwise, only wicketkeeper George Hill seriously troubled the scorers with an innings-best knock of 52.

Richard Mills took 4-41 as Reddings reached 206-7 from their 50 overs but in contrast the away batting was supreme, with Brannon Varley and Mike Coles each scoring unbeaten 71s in an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 114 to guide the side to victory.

"We were very good in the 'second half' and we got to the target pretty easily really,'' added Senneck, whose side host Chippenham this weekend.

"Everyone looked pretty accomplished at the crease and then Brannon and Mike came in and did the business.

"Brannon has come back to the club and Mike has played a lot of cricket at WEPL level and for Wiltshire and he's still playing the one-day game for the county so it's great for us to have guys like that around.

"The important thing is that there is a great atmosphere in the group and a great buzz about the side.''
