TROWBRIDGE Chess Club are celebrating after winning the Somerset County Cup for the first time.

In the final, Trowbridge travelled to Glastonbury and beat the hosts 4.5-3.5.

Andy Cooper, Mark Leonard and Dave Marshall all won their games, while Godfrey McCann, Derek Rothwell and Roy Ludlow all picked up draws.

However, Louis Burton and Nigel Crucefix suffered losses in their matches.

Trowbridge’s star player of the evening was Cooper, who beat Millfield School chess coach and grandmaster Matthew Turner.

The new Somerset County Cup champions meet at the Wesley Road Club, Wesley Road, Newtown, Trowbridge at 7.30pm every Thursday during the season, which runs from the beginning of September to the end of May.

New members are always welcome, irrespective of their standard of chess.
