FOLLOWING a derby win over Frome and other results going in their favour, Trowbridge are within touching distance of the Southern Counties South title.

James Davies registered twice for Dan Jeffries' side in addition to efforts from Daniel Greenslade, Max Day and Jason Reed, who also added a penalty, while Oliver Weaver’s four conversions swelled the score to 41-24 at Doric Park.

Trowbridge now need a further three points before they are crowned champions, and the earliest opportunity to do that will be this weekend when they tackle second-placed Marlborough.

After circling that fixture in the diary many months ago, Jeffries is looking forward to getting out there and winning the title in the right way.

Day is the only injury concern for Jeffries after he picked up a knee problem in Saturday’s win, although it is not expected to prevent him being involved.

Jeffries said: “It’s great to finally get to this weekend’s game.

"It has all got very odd because it’s been a one-game season for the second half of the season, but after they lost at the weekend, we don’t need to win any more games to win the league.

“We need three points from the next four games, which we can get even if we don't win any of them.

“Marlborough and North Dorset are the only two sides who have beaten us, so for a bit of pride we would like to get our own back on Marlborough and get the job done.

“We just want to go out and win. With how the season has gone, it would be great to win the league at Marlborough.”

While the win over Frome was never in doubt, the Trowbridge boss praised the opposition for creating a competitive game.

“It sets us up really nicely for this weekend. We just had to go and get the job done on Saturday. With it being a local derby and all the other things, it was going to be more difficult than the table suggests,” he added.

“We were happy to pick up our five points and even happier when we found out Marlborough had lost. That made it really exciting going into the last couple of games.

“Frome were really competitive and they made it really difficult to play in, so I thought the boys did a good job.

“We have to take a bit of the blame for it, we went four tries up before half-time and took our foot off the pedal.”
