CALNE husband and wife team Simon and Denise Nott shone in the sun at the Royal Berkshire 10k road race in Reading last weekend.

Simon ran his fastest 10k of 2018 as he finished runner-up to local runner Rob Corney in a time of 31mins 39secs while Denise was fourth overall and picked up the prize as first veteran over 35 in 40:44.

“We decided to do a different event as it is good to challenge yourself and it was a very well organised race held on a good course but it was so hot on Sunday!” said Simon.

“We went off at 31 minutes pace and it was nip and tuck between me and the winner until just after halfway when he took a couple of seconds out of me every mile without ever really getting away.

“I wasn’t sure if he would come back or not and I was just wary of manging the heat and didn’t want to push it any harder. He thanked me afterwards because he ran a personal best (31mins 30secs) so he was glad I turned up.

“I enjoyed the race and Denise was pleased too with her performance.”

Calne Running Club’s Mike Rose took part in the inaugural Exeter marathon and completed the 26.2 miles in 3hrs 09secs for 12th place.

TROWBRIDGE international high jumper Tom Gale is clearly still re-adjusting to life post-Commonwealth Games.

While now fully back in training as he re-sets his sights on the summer season after the winter trip Down Under where he made his senior international debut for England Gale could only clear 2.08m, well below his best, to finish fifth in the Loughborough International on Sunday.

INDIVIDUAL victories for Alex Knight, Dylan Stoneman and Tyla Werrett proved to be the highlights on another tough day for Team Bath AC’s athletes in the Midland Premier South West Division of the Youth Development League.

Werrett was arguably the star performer for the team as she marked her competitive debut for the club by winning the U13 girls’ 75m in 10.2secs and the long jump with 4m82 plus added valuable points with second place in the 150m in 20.1secs.

In addition Knight won the U13 boys’ 800m in 2mins 21.4secs and Stoneman triumphed in the U13 boys’ 1500m in 4:52.8 while the U15 boys’ claimed victory in the 4x100m relay event in 48.2secs.

Despite those wins and the advantage of hosting the match at the University track the squad found the higher level of competition tough and finished sixth again with 316 points.

Honourable second places went to Joe Carter in the U15 boys 200m (24.4secs), Kiran Carter in the U15 boys high jump (1.70m), Fraser Middleton in the U15 boys 800m (2:10.5) and Charlie Staddon in the U13 boys 75m hurdles (13.6secs).
