BOWLS: Devon and hell for men's sides

BOTH men's senior and junior (U25) sides had to give second best to Devon in their latest South West Counties League matches last weekend.

The senior men were beaten 144-106 on the neutral green at Ashcombe Park, Weston-Super-Mare while the U25 side fared little better losing 71-55 at the same venue.

Wiltshire only won on two of the six rinks in the main match with five shot successes recorded by the rinks skipped by Nick Grenfell (Box) and Richard Young (Highworth).

Across the board Wiltshire trailed 66-46 at 10 ends and never recovered to only collect four points out of 22.

And in the junior match (U25s) Wiltshire only took the honours on one of the three rinks with Gary Jackson’s quartet winning by one shot on the 21st and last end.

Both Michael Richards and Tom Walkley’s rinks lost by 12 and seven shots respectively so Wiltshire only picked-up two of the 16 points on offer.

Seniors - Rink 1: Tony Keating, Gary Fippen (both Spencer Moulton), Bill Collier (Amesbury) & Ian White (S Moulton) lost to Grant Howland 19-24. Rink 2: Ben Hatton, Ashley Plumb, Jim Ford & Steve Mitchell (all Amesbury) lost to David Pratt 17-28. Rink 3: Dave Matthews, Kevin Lee (both Westlecot), Shaun Hicks & Richard Young (both Highworth) beat Francis Newton 22-17. Rink 4: Chris Easton, Steve Morton (both Avon), Dale Hayward (Spencer Melksham) & Colin Easton (Avon) lost to Chris Packer 20-23. Rink 5: Kevin Carter, James Richman (both Highworth), Steve Gedge (S Melksham) & Mark Richman (Highworth) lost to Lee Phillips 10-39. Rink 6: Bob George (North Wilts), Dean Thomas (Box), John Ellis (Ames) & Nick Grenfell (Box) beat Richard Evans 18-13.

Score: Wiltshire lost to Devon 106-144 and by 4pts to 18.

U25s - Rink 1: Michael Titcombe Jnr (Westlecot), Tom Skull (Wootton Bassett), Ashley Keirl (Spencer Moulton) & Michael Richards (W’lecot) lost 21-33. Rink 2: Craig Hatherall (W’lecot), Ollie Little (Chippenham T), Josh Fail (Purton) & Gary Jackson (W’lecot) won 21-20. Rink 3: Alex Wickham (Chip T), Craig Morphet (Rodbourne Cheney), Josh Cottle & Tom Walkley (both WB) lost 13-18.

Score: Wiltshire lost to Devon 55-71 and by 2pts to 14.
