ATHLETICS: Talbot is in this for the long run
WITH an Olympic debut now firmly under his belt, Danny Talbot’s focus has now switched to cementing his long-term future in sprinting.
The 21-year-old, who was part of the TeamGB 4x100m relay quartet that competed at London 2012, finished his studies at the University of Bath at the start of the summer and is now looking to graduate to a full-time athletics career.
Talbot was back in action at the Gyulai István Memorial meet in Budapest, Hungary, on Monday and finished fifth in the 200m, and says that he plans to make the most of the remainder of his season.
“I’ve got a few more races lined up and now the Olympics is over, I just want to enjoy my training and the rest of the season,” said Talbot.
“Becoming a full-time athlete is definitely the next step for me and there’s nothing else that I’ve ever wanted to do.
“What I need to do is get myself a sponsor and that will allow me to do it – I already have my kit sponsored by Adidas.
“The aim for me is to try and get things sorted out by October and hopefully then I can push on to the next level.”
The Trowbridge sprint star is already looking to the future and added: “There’s the World Championships to look forward to next year (in Moscow, Russia) and then in 2014, you’ve got the Commonwealth Games (in Glasgow).
“I’m so grateful to have the chance to have run in London and the overall aim now is to try and be at my peak for Rio in 2016.”
On Monday, the British 4x100m relay team will reunite at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting in Zurich and Talbot will also feature in the 100m.
