RUGBY: Melksham 34 Pewsey Vale 12

MELKSHAM claimed the derby spoils to get their Dorset & Wilts One North campaign off to a flying start.

Flanker Elliot Taylor scored the first try from pick and drive close to the line with Scott Simmons converting.

And the home side extended their advantage as number eight Phil Williams pushed his way over from a lineout.

Pewsey hit back with a converted score before the interval, but Simmons booted a penalty early in the second half to stretch Melksham clear again.

Centre David Dyke finished off a backs move for the third score midway through the second period and then brought up the bonus point from broken play, Simmons adding the extras.

Pewsey added a second score with five minutes to play but flanker Alex Britton had the final say for Melksham, pouncing on dropped ball and Simmons converted

Skipper Aaron Brailey, who with Simmons is heading up the coaching following the departure of Dan Jeffries to Corsham, said: “It was good start to season after a tough year last year we have made a few changes to the way we play and train.

Melksham are keen to attract players of all abilities to play in three senior sides, with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See melkshamrfc.co.uk for details.
