Dave Stockley celebrates his singles victory
TROWBRIDGE golfer Dave Stockley is celebrating getting his hands on Westbury Country Park Golf Club’s singles KO title after 25 years.
The 40-year-old, who lives on Clarendon Avenue and works as a bricklayer, first joined his club at the age of 15 and had been unsuccessful every year until his luck finally changed earlier this month.
With the scores tied after the 18th, Stockley triumphed over club chairman Brian Bennett on the first play-off hole in the final on September 15 and was delighted to finally end a quarter of a century of hurt.
“I was playing against the old boys back when I was just 15 and I’ve entered the championship every single year since then,” said Stockley.
“Because I’ve managed to get my handicap down a bit over the years, I’ve sometimes been giving away 15, 16 or 17 shots against some people and that’s just made it really difficult – one year I got it down from 28 to eight.
“I still had to give away eight shots in the final this year but I had the bit of luck that you need and a few people were off their game when I played them.
“I won the West Wilts Pro-Am last year and I also won a Pro-Am at the old Thoulstone Park a few years ago but this is a massive win – I’m really happy about it.”
