FOOTBALL: Clayton hails five-star show

DAVE Clayton said his men showed why they are a Toolstation League Premier Division side with their dominant 5-0 Les Phillips Cup victory over first division opponents Portishead last weekend.

Top scorer Gary Higdon netted a hat-trick while winger Leigh Rogers scored twice as Town booked a first round trip to Chard Town on November 10.

“We certainly didn’t take them lightly and we wanted to prove why we’re a side from a higher division now,” said Clayton.

“They were one of the sides who beat us after we got promoted last year and they were very physical but we stood up to it well and it was a really good performance.

“Gary was great again but it’s nice to get some different names on the scoresheet sometimes and Leigh took his chance with two good goals.”

Melksham’s trip to Street on Tuesday fell foul of the wet weather and Clayton’s men are also without a fixture tomorrow.

He added: “We have fallen behind on games. We’ve played six and some other sides have played 10. But we’re not worrying about that because there’s nothing we can do about it.”
