Castle Combe stalwart dies at 73
MOTOR RACING: Tributes have been paid to Peter Baskett, the former chief medical officer at the Castle Combe circuit, who has died at the age of 73.
A spokesman for the circuit said: "Management, staff, officials and supporters of the Castle Combe circuit were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Peter Baskett, former chief medical officer at the Wiltshire track for more than 30 years and an integral part of the medical team up until his death."
Dr Baskett, a world renowned expert in anaesthesia and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, began working with the medical team at Castle Combe in the early 1960s and was promoted to chief medical officer in 1972.
His immense skill and knowledge helped develop the Castle Combe team into one of the most respected in the business, a number of drivers owing their lives to his pioneering abilities and innovations in emergency care.
The author of over 170 scientific publications, he also helped pioneer advanced training for ambulance staff into what we now know as paramedics.
After handing over his post of CMO to Jerry Nolan five years ago, he remained a vital member of the Castle Combe medical team until his death, as well as retaining his many other positions with numerous medical associations and societies.
He leaves a widow wife, Fiona, son Simon and daughters Lucy, Olivia and Beatrice.
A memorial service will be held later this month in his home city of Bristol.
