Curtain comes down on Wincanton season
Wincanton racecourse hosts its last raceday of the season on
Thursday May 8.
To celebrate the end of a successful season, Wincanton will be presenting
their two prestigious annual industry awards, the Bathwick Tyres Trainers'
Championship and the Jason Dufosee Trophy for the leading jockey.
The Bathwick Tyres Trainers' Championship is set to be the most hotly
contended competition, with four top trainers all in the running for the
first prize of £8,000.
Jockeys Richard Johnson, Robert Thornton, Joe Tizzard and Sam Thomas are
very much in the race for the Jason Dufosee Trophy, which will be presented
by a member of the Dufosee family.
Both of these competitions are set to provide a tense finish on the night
with additional prizes of £2,000 and a £1,000 in cash and an expenses paid
private box for 12 at the course to also be awarded in the trainers'
championship.
Steven Clarke, managing director of Wincanton Racecourse, said: "This season
has been one of our most exciting to date. The standard of trainers and
jockeys that the course has attracted over recent years is enviable and just
gets better and better.
"I look forward to Thursday as the culmination of the trainers' championship
and the Jason Dufosee contest, but also as an opportunity to thank all the
owners, trainers and jockeys for their support throughout the season."
Clarke added: "Awarded the Best Small Racecourse in the South West by the
Racegoers' Association for the 17th year, as well as presented with the
Racehorse Owners' Association's Gold Standard Award again were great
recognition for the team here."
The gates open at 4pm, with the first race starting at 5.50pm and the last
race at 8.20pm.
The feature race of the evening is the Bradfords Building Supplies Wessex
Area Champion Hunters' Steeplechase, which has a competitive prize fund of
£8,500.
There are six races on the card and a prize fund of £34,500 available. After
the racing and awards ceremony there is live entertainment from tribute
band, Imagine The Beatles, who will perform outside the Badger Bar in the
grandstand enclosure.
