SEAGRY Primary School held its annual sports tournament for small schools on
Saturday with eight north Wiltshire schools competing.
The schools played in a eight-a-side football tournament and a seven-a-side
netball tournament for children aged between seven and 11.
Seagry School headteacher Jill Rowe said: "The tournament is for smaller
schools in the area to give them the chance to compete against one another.
"The schools do play each other in school sports, but some of the schools
struggle to get a team together so this is the tournament that everyone
looks forward to.
"The football tournament ended in a sporting tie between Somerford Walter
Powell School and Christian Malford. Each teams will hold the trophy for six
months.
"The final went to penalties and we felt it was too much pressure on the
young children to take them especially after both semi-finals had gone to
extra-time and penalties.
"Also it was the first time that Somerford Walter Powell had reached the
final, which is a great achievement considering they have only 51 children
at the school.
"The netball was won by Sherston School and Langley Fitzhurse were nominated
for the most sporting team award, which is what we are trying to promote.
The children really enjoyed it and neighbouring schools were supporting each
other. There was a lovely atmosphere created by the kids, parents and staff,
and there was a great turnout with more than 100 cars in the car park.
"The refreshments were provided by Seagry parents and we raised £500 for the
school. The referees were provided by King Edward's School in Bath and some
parents refereed games too.
"The children had a great day and I would like to thank everyone who made it
possible, the children, parents and all the staff at the schools. Long may
the event continue because these things are really important."
