Wiltshire Times - Sport News Wiltshire athletes shine in the sun | | Tuesday Jeffries, of Broughton Gifford, competing in the high jump (21775/9) |
Soaring temperatures didn't stop Wiltshire athletes from
recording some superb performances in the 2008 Wiltshire Track and Field
Championships, held on Saturday at Bath University.
Among the new county champions is 11-year-old Broughton Gifford high jumper
Tuesday Jeffries, who took the under 13s title by clearing 1.40, 10cm clear
of silver medal winner Frankie Temple Brown, of Marlborough Juniors.
Tuesday, a member of Team Bath, only began jumping last year and has made
amazing progress over the winter, coached by Jimmy Allan.
The victory gave Tuesday a hat-trick of wins in three weeks, following
success at the Bath University Open and her first Young Athletes' League
meeting of the season in Carmarthen.
Ed Mason, from Melksham, retained his county title by taking the senior high
jump, clearing 1.90, while Heather Cumming, from Box, took the under 17s
crown with 1.65.
On the track Team Bath team-mate Anna Alexander-Holmes came home with a pair
of county titles, winning the under 15s 100m and 200m races. The 100m was an
especially fine run as she clocked 13.69 to beat Abi Davies, from
Trowbridge, into second place with 13.73.
Chippenham sprinter Elaine O'Neill repeated the double by winning the under
17s 100m and 200m events, while Katie Geddes, from Warminster, took the
under 13s 100m title.
While Team Bath, their numbers boosted this season by many young athletes
who have moved to the club following the closure of Wessex and Bath
Athletics Club at the end of 2007, recorded excellent results, there were
also some strong performances from athletes from Swindon, Salisbury, Devizes
and Marlborough clubs, as well as from athletes running without club
affiliations.
