Blue Circle win summer league crown

6:39pm Friday 3rd October 2008

Westbury Blue Circle have won the Wiltshire County Short Mat Bowls Association summer league triples final.

The final at Seend Social Club on Sunday was between Marshfield, the winners of the Northern League, and Westbury Blue Circle, winners of the Southern League.

On paper this looked to be a one-sided affair in favour of Westbury Blue Circle, with five regular county players in their line-up, but it turned out not to be the case.

The first ten ends on both mats were hotly contested, with each club taking one mat each, to leave it nicely poised for an exciting second half.

After six ends on the one mat it looked heavily in favour of Westbury Blue Circle when they scored a five followed by a four. This turned out to be the case with Westbury Blue Circle finally winning the first mat of the second half by 17 shots to five. The outcome of the final all hinged on the remaining mat which went neck and neck throughout nine of the ten ends, leaving the result of the final down to the tenth end. During the last end the advantage swung to and fro, with Westbury Blue Circle eventually coming out on top nine shots to four and therefore winning the final by six points to two. The trophies were presented to both teams by Colin Waldeck, vice-chairman of the Wiltshire County Short Mat Bowling Association.
