WILTSHIRE golfer Matt Swales is hoping his first-ever professional tour win will be the first of many.

The 24-year-old, who plays out of Cumberwell Park in Bradford on Avon, became a Jamega Tour champion for the first time last week after tasting victory at the Mill Ride club near Ascot.

Swales, who lives in Yatton Keynell, shot rounds of 70 and 67 to finish seven under par, finishing ahead of Northamptonshire man John Chamberlain (six under) and Hampshire's Sam Robertshawe (five under).

His aim is now to try and finish in the top two of the Jamega Tour's second order of merit and win the 'Race to the Gulf' – a spot on the 2013-2014 MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Tour.

“It was my first win on any pro tour and with the way I'd been playing, I felt like it had been coming,” said Swales.

“I didn't really have my best rounds but I was holing some really long puts and that's what made the difference in the end.

“It's my fourth season doing the Jamega Tour and I've had a few events where I've finished third in the past but that was as close as I'd come.

“There are two order of merits and I'm top of the second one. If you finish in the top two, you get your place in the MENA tour paid for and you could be heading off to Dubai in the September.

“It'd be great to get one of those spots so that's what I'm going to try and do.”
