WILTSHIRE amateur Jordan Smith suffered his second singles defeat in two days as the United States regained the Walker Cup on Long Island on Sunday with a ruthless performance that left Great Britain and Ireland with little chance.

America started the final day four points ahead and after sharing the morning foursomes to stay in front at 10-6, had the perfect platform ahead of the singles at the National Golf Links of America.

They cruised their way through them untroubled too, reaching the 13.5 points they needed when Nathan Smith toppled Nathan Kimsey in match five.

It rendered Bowood amateur Smith's penultimate match against his American opponent Jordan Niebrugge irrelevant in the context of the match and the Derry Hill 20 year old struggled against an early birdie blitz from his opponent.

Niebrugge birdied six of the first eight holes to reach the turn with a virtually unassailable six up advantage and, although Smith pulled one hole back on the 11th he missed a short putt on 12 to reduce the deficit further and it was all over when the Wiltshire man missed a part putt on the short 13th.

The US team's victory ensured the 2011 loss in Aberdeen was firmly put behind the Americans, who now lead overall by a scoreline of 35-8, with one draw.
