CUMBERWELL Park pro Steve Surry was unable to replicate his first-round fireworks, but still comfortably made the cut at the South African Open in Johannesburg today.

Trowbridge ace Surry shot a second-round 73, one over par, to ensure he'd be one of the 70-plus players to remain for the final two rounds and open up the possibility of a substantial prize at Glendower Golf Club.

While more famous names - including 2001 Open champion David Duval, ex-European Ryder Cup star Niclas Fasth, 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley among them - missed the cut, Surry's steady second 18 holes kept him in teh fray.

The Wiltshire man, 31, tied 10th after an opening-day 68, which featured a second-shot eagle at the 11th, put together a largely uneventful 18 holes after starting on the 10th.

He briefly got to five under par overall with a birdie at the long 15th, but dropped shots at the 17th and fourth and 15 pars left him on the same score as European Ryder Cup star Edoardo Molinari.

Marco Crespi continued his good start to the tournament with a second-day 67 to claim the clubhouse lead.

The Italian followed up his 65 from the opening day with a five-under-par round that included six birdies - four of which coming on the front nine - and just the one bogey.

That left the 35-year-old, who has only had his European Tour card seven days after finishing third at the Qualifying School at PGA Golf Catalunya last week, on 12 under for the tournament and he was later joined on that mark by 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.
