THE HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour returns to Cumberwell Park for The GRENKE Championship tomorrow, where host course golf manager Ali James is hoping to be among those teeing it up on the final day.

James took part in the EuroPro’s inaugural event at his home course last year, but is aiming to go one better and make the 36-hole cut this week, having missed out in 2014.

The GRENKE Championship is the fifth event of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour season and carries a £50,000 prize fund with the winner taking home £10,000.

Played over 54-holes with a cut after the second of three days, the tournament concludes on Friday when the final round will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package which will air on Sky Sports later in the month.

Joining James in the 168-man field is Surrey’s Gary King, the Race To Desert Springs leader who already has two wins to his name this season.

Sam Matton (Bowood Golf & Country Club) and Qualifying School winner Martin Sell (Wrag Barn Golf Club) are among the local interest, while Laurie Canter (Cumberwell Park Golf Club) will be looking to make use of home advantage as he aims to improve on last season’s impressive debut-season top-20 finish on the Order of Merit.

“It’s great to be hosting the EuroPro Tour again this year after the massive success in 2014,” said James. “The members loved having the Tour here last year and seeing how the pros play the course under tournament conditions.

“We are proud to have been asked to host the Tour again and have no doubt that it will go from strength to strength. We had a huge 55-team pro-am this year where many of the members took part, which shows how excited they are to see the EuroPro return and we are incredibly grateful of their support.

“I will be playing myself and really want to try and make the cut this time. Being involved in the build-up and all the preparations it will be great to be able to play in the event. Matt James and his team have done a great job getting the course in fantastic shape, it’s a playing a bit softer than last year but we should still see some good scoring.”

Daniel Godding, Director of Operations at the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour, added: “Our first visit to Cumberwell Park last summer was a resounding success. The course was in great condition, the players were enthused by the test, and the support of Cumberwell’s members and local golf fans was outstanding.

“I was at the course recently and it’s clear the green staff, Ali, and his team have outdone themselves this year. We’re all looking forward to an exciting tournament this week.”

Cumberwell Park's Steve Surry is also among those teeing it up in the championship.
