LAURIE Canter birdied the last to make the cut at his first European Tour event in South Africa.

Canter posted a one-over second round of 73 in the Alfred Dunhill Championship to finish level par overall and sneak into the weekend.

However, it was a tough baptism for fellow Wiltshire golfer Steve Surry, who finished well down the field and will take no part in the final two rounds at Leopard Creek Golf Club.

Having shot one-under yesterday, Cumberwell Par pro Canter threatened to undo that good work with a double and triple bogey in the space of three holes. A birdie was sandwiched in between but he was still four over at the turn.

However, Canter roared back over the back nine and birdies at 11 and 14 before another at the final hole ensured he would remain in action over the weekend.

After shooting six-over yesterday, fellow Cumberwell ace Surry fared even worse in the second round and carded a nine-over 81.

That saw him finish on 15-over and in a tie for 151st place, with only three players who completed both opening two rounds below him on the leaderboard.

Starting on the 10th hole, Surry enjoyed a solid beginning to his round with five straight birdies. However, a triple bogey eight at the 15th – his sixth – left him with a mountain to climb.

Another bogey came at the 18th as he went out in 41, before three in a row on holes three, four and five pushed him further into the mire.

Surry then posted a double bogey five on the seventh – his 16th – and even back-to-back pars to finish could not prevent him finishing his round in the 80s.
