LAURIE Canter will be pleased with his first showing of the season on the European Tour as a one-under-par final day secured him a top 35 finish.

The Cumberwell Park golfer hit four birdies as he secured his third under par round of the weekend at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Canter, who only made it into the weekend with a birdie on the 18th on Friday, started the last day well as he followed up his par on the first with a birdie on the par-five second.

The 26-year-old, who earned his tour card at Q-School, then picked up another shot at the par-four sixth to see him go out in 33.

Canter continued his fine form after the turn as he secured another birdie on the 11th hole, before dropping his first shot of the day at the 13th.

He responded perfectly two holes later as he returned to three under for the day with a birdie on 15.

However, back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 tainted the score card and he had to settle for his third one under par round of the tournament.

That saw him finish in tied 34th, 13 shots off eventual winner Charl Schwartzel, who recorded his fourth win at Leopard Creek Country Club and became only the third South African to win 10 European Tour events.

Meanwhile, Canter has been promised an invitation to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after impressing Johann Rupert, chairman of the tournament’s committee, on Saturday.

"It was unbelievable, really," said Canter after his round with 11-time Leopard Creek club champion Rurik Gobel.

"And then Mr Rupert said he would invite me to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. That's pretty cool."
