LAURIE Canter found the going tough as he concluded the final two rounds of the SA Open in Johannesburg today.

The Cumberwell Park professional, embarking on his maiden season on the European Tour, slipped from a promising position at four under par after two rounds, to finish five over for the weather-affected tournament at Glendower Golf Club.

The 26 year old, who had made his third successive cut on tour since earning his card back in November on Saturday morning, was lying at four over par for his third round - level par overall - when lightning forced a suspension of play on Saturday.

He returned to complete that 18 holes this morning, adding two birdies and three birdies to post a 77 and slip back to one over for the tournament.

Canter then made a disappointing start to his final round, going out in 40 shots - four over par - including a double bogey at the seventh.

His back nine was steadier, featuring one birdie and one bogey as he posted a 76 to finish outside the top 60.

Canter is set to play alongside Cumberwell Park clubmate Steve Surry in next week's Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, starting on Thursday.
