CUMBERWELL Park pro Laurie Canter is celebrating making yet another cut in a European Tour event after progressing to the latter stages of the Joburg Open in South Africa today.

The 26-year-old, who earned a 2016 tour card at qualifying school last November, has now made the cut in four successive events after finishing his second round at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club tied 31st on the leaderboard.

Canter, who carded a two-under-par opening round yesterday, tussled with the East Course today but maintained his fine progress with a three-under 69, despite a treacherous double bogey on the back nine.

An opening hole birdie was cancelled out by a bogey on the par-four third hole but the Cumberwell Park man went a shot under-par on the ninth to restore the deficit.

Canter suffered a setback as he took two extra shots to complete the par-four 11 th but birdies on the 14th and 17th and an eagle on the par-five 18th ensured that he ended his round riding the crest of a wave, five-under overall.

Unfortunately, Canter won’t be joined in the latter stages by Cumberwell Park compatriot Steve Surry, who finished tied 96th on one-under-par overall.

Shooting on the West Course, Surry racked up three consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes but they were negated by bogeys on the eighth, 10th and 13th.

Trowbridge’s Surry did birdie the par-five 15th but a bogey on the 18th followed.

Swindon’s David Howell hit a two-over par second round but is through to Saturday and Sunday’s play after making the cut tied 42nd in the standings.
