STEVE Surry made an excellent recovery from a wobbly start as Cumberwell Park clubmate Laurie Canter also made an encouraging opening to the Dimension Data Pro-Am event in South Africa today.

While Canter carded a two-under-par round of 70 at the Montagu Golf Club, one of three being used for this week's Sunshine Tour event in Fancourt, Surry signed for a level par 72 at nearby Outeniqua.

Fellow Wiltshire player Jordan Smith, of the Bowood club, carded three under par at Outeniqua.

Sunshine Tour member Surry, 34, appeared in trouble as he went out in 38 for his first nine holes, a birdie at the second being cancelled out by birdies at the fourth, sixth and seventh.

But he repaired the damage with three birdies from the 11th and although another shot went at the 16th, he was safely ensconsed in the middle of the field.

2016 European Tour player Canter meanwhile was aiming to bounce back after his first missed cut of the season at the Tshwane Open last week.

A four-birdie round, including three in four holes around the turn, helped him to two under par, five behind the home leaders Brandon Stone and Jaco Van Zyl and Italian Francesco Laporta.
