WILTSHIRE bounced back from their opening day defeat at the hands of Gloucestershire at South West Week in Cornwall by clinching a 9-5 victory over Devon yesterday.

Paul Green's side put themselves back into contention for the Inter–County Team Championship as a dominant singles performance set up their first win of the week at St Enodoc.

Wiltshire lost just one of eight singles matches in the morning as county champion Ben Amor and his brother Jamie (both Marlborough), Jack Charman (North Wilts), Jake Bolton (Ogbourne Downs) and Simon Futcher (Marlborough) were all successful, while Bowood's Garry Slade and Luke Gorman halved their contests.

Charman and playing partner Futcher and Ben Amor and vice-captain Ali James (Cumberwell Park) then won matches in a shared foursomes session in the afternoon to ensure the county were comfortable winners.

The Inter–County Team Championship was taking a break today as the 10 players from each county contested the South West Amateur Championship, with the event also acting as the qualifying round for the English Men’s County Championship.

The successful county will represent the South West at the county championship finals at Sandwell Park Golf Club in West Bromwich at the end of September. Wiltshire last won the national title in 2011 and 2012.
