STEPHEN Dodd clinched victory in the GRENKE Championship at Bradford on Avon’s Cumberwell Park this afternoon after defeating Adam Hodkinson in a play-off.

The duo finished on 13-under-par in the Europro Tour event but Welshman Dodd, a three-time winner on the European Tour, claimed the trophy and £10,000 top prize after Hodkinson bogeyed the first extra hole.

Nicholas Garland was a shot behind in third place, while home player Steve Surry finished in a tie for sixth on 10-under. Cumberwell Park amateur James Cooper ended T19 on seven-under.

“I am delighted to win. I wasn’t really sure what to expect this week because I haven’t really played a lot. I started well, made some good shots and got some putts in. I struggled a little bit towards the end but then had a good finish," said Dodd.

“In the play-off, he had a quick putt downhill so it was easy to knock it five or six foot passed and that is what happened, and fortunately for me he missed the return."

Garland took a one-shot lead into the final round today after storming to 11-under after 36 holes, just ahead of Dodd.

However, he went out in one-over par, allowing playing partner Dodd to storm into the lead after the 49-year-old recorded three birdies on his front nine. Another birdie on 11 then took Dodd to 14-under par and he seemingly had a grip on the tournament.

After a two-over front nine, Hodkinson flew back into contention on the home straight and seven birdies in his final nine holes saw him shoot a five-under round of 66 and return to the clubhouse 13-under.

By the time Hodkinson had signed his scorecard he dramatically held the lead as a double bogey six on the 15th saw Dodd fall a shot behind.

Garland, meanwhile, clawed a shot back at the penultimate hole meaning both he and Dodd could force a play-off should they birdie the last.

Both men left themselves lengthy putts on the 18th green but while Garland faltered, Dodd was able to sink his effort for a three-under round of 68 to take Hodkinson into a play-off. Garland finished on a one-under 70 for the day.

Dodd and Hodkinson men looked evenly matched as they played hole 18 again, both finding the green in two, but the latter took a disappointing three-putt to gift Dodd a tap-in par for the title, which he duly holed.

Home player Surry looked like being a leading contender for victory as after teeing off nine-under, three birdies in his first six holes saw him take a share of the lead. However, a bogey on seven saw him surrender a shot for a two-under outward nine.

Surry was unable to get himself going again on the home stretch and another bogey on 15 saw him slide out of contention and although he was able to pick up a shot at 17, that was swiftly relinquished at the last as he went round in a one-under 70.
