HE arrived feeling under the weather but a first County Championship triumph proved just the tonic for Tom Law at Kingsdown Golf Club on Sunday.

The 20 year old from Swindon shrugged off illness to complete a rare double - having lifted the county foursomes title with Broome Manor clubmate Michael Cox at Tidworth Garrison GC a week earlier - after edging out 2015 Wiltshire champion Garry Slade (Bowood) in a three-hole play-off.

Sports therapy student Law admitted he was unsure whether to even take part in the event at the club near Box, but his decision to do so was richly rewarded.

"I was struck down by a bit of illness and I wasn't too sure I was going to play,'' said the Wichelstowe man.

"In the end I rocked up thinking 'let's have some fun.' It's been quite a fun ride what with winning the foursomes with Mike as well.

"It's my first county championship even though I've been playing in it for a few years.''

Law and Slade had finished their two rounds on level par (144), two clear of Salisbury & South Wilts' Tom Stagg in third, with Joe Retford, from the Cumberwell Park club near Bradford on Avon, next a shot further back, followed by home player Paul McMullen on 148.

Slade had shot a 70 to lead after the first of two rounds, one clear of Jack Seaman (Wrag Barn) and two ahead of Jamie Amor (Marlborough) and Law.

In tougher afternoon conditions, Law's level par 72 proved the best round and accolade shared by Casey Bean (Manor House), with Slade's 74 meaning they he and Law ended level at the head of the 78-man field.

The duo shared the first play-off hole, but when Slade failed to get up and down at the next, Law finished with two fours to clinch the silverware, along with the Team Shield with Broome Manor colleagues James Wiltshire and Tom Ruddle.

Law, who was also handing in the final dissertation for his three-year University of Bath undergraduate course this week, now hopes to play a part in Wiltshire's team for South West Week at Weston-super-Mare next month but admits his studies mean he hadn't really planned his summer golf schedule.

"I've played at South West Week for the last three years and hopefully the win means I get a call-up because it's one of my favourite weeks.''

Wrag Barn's trio of Seaman, Simon Irwin and Max Drayton were runners up in the Shield at the championships, which were visited by former Wiltshire player Jordan Smith, taking time out from his schedule in his first full season on the European Tour.

Smith received an engraved medal from county president Phil Hodges for his contribution to the winning Wiltshire teams in the national county championships in 2011 and 2012.
