West Wilts on brink of promotion
 |
| Matt Kenyon |
Lansdown 0, West Wilts 2
WEST Wilts gained three more vital points in their quest for promotion.
Dave Jeffreys' men struck twice in the first half to ensure they recorded
two successive league victories for the first time since November.
West Wilts got off to a tentative start, giving the ball away cheaply
affording Lansdown early efforts on goal, which they might have converted
had man-of-the match Ben Hutchins not been on hand to deny them.
Despite this stuttering start West Wilts managed to raise the tempo, with
Matt Kenyon's blistering pace and Dan Sheppard's stick skills heaping
pressure on the Lansdown defence. The breakthrough came after 15 minutes
after some neat interplay between the forwards. Martin Allsop's ball into
the box was lifted up off a defender's stick and captain Dave Jeffreys was
on hand to slam his shot past the goalkeeper.
The goal seemed to galvanise the team and for the remainder of the half West
Wilts created chances, with both Dave Yalland and Will Powell going close.
The second goal came after 30 minutes but it was well worth waiting for as
Yalland unselfishly teed-up Olly Goddard to fire in an unstoppable shot from
the top of the 'D' which ended up in the roof of the net.
The second half was relatively stale but West Wilts will be thankful to
keeper Hutchins for another clean sheet.
Phil Jeffreys thought he had made it 3-0, but the umpire adjudged that the
free hit was taken too early and no goal was awarded.
West Wilts are now two points ahead of their closest rivals and could secure
promotion at home this Saturday against Somerset Gryphons.
